Diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2024
What has your cancer adventure looked like so far?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2024. I have had two major surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and now, medications for the next 10 years. I haven’t let that stop me though! I recently learned how to surf in California and in November I’ll be running my first 10k!
How has exercise played a role in your treatment, recovery, survivorship or overall wellbeing?
Being active has helped me through this wild ride. I have taken up hiking and trying new things since being diagnosed and in my early months of survivorship.
Do you have a favorite workout or activity that brings you joy?
I love walking and have recently been more active in walking around Back Cove in Portland as much as possible!
What advice would you give to fellow survivors who want to get moving?
JUST DO IT! It's easier said than done, but once I realized that I actually can do these things the more fun they became.
How do you motivate yourself to exercise?
I’m constantly reminded how weak I felt during treatment versus how strong I feel, now, after exercise. The difference is motivation enough.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know?
Cancer sucks, but it’s your mindset and determination that truly make a difference. I didn’t let cancer win, and I remind myself that every single day!
